Big Seafood Girly here. Living in the midwest finding good quality seafood can be a nightmare.

Here are some tricks and tips I have found that have helped me.

  1. Learning what days your seafood counter/fishmonger gets their large shipments in. Learning this will help you make the most of a grocery trip as well as giving you the biggest selection to chose from. Most of the time I will buy my shellfish bright and early on Saturday before the weekend shopping rush.

  2. Not all seafood counters carry the same selection. I have found that some have wider selections of fish and some have wider selections of shellfish (i.e shrimp, mussels, clams, oysters). Learn your grocery stores :).

  3. There is nothing wrong with frozen! Most seafood that is found at your grocery store has in fact been frozen at some point. Most seafood counters thaw out the product and put it on ice in the displays. If you are shopping in advance I always suggest buying frozen. If you are planning to use the seafood within 1-2 days, you can buy from the counter.
